Monday Musings with HelenKay Dimon

Not Quite Romantic Suspense

I write a lot of romantic suspense. I love the high stakes, the mix of emotional and physical danger and fast pace. Combining heart-thumping romance with tension-filled dangerous moments is a delicate balance. After all, when the bullets are flying and things are exploding romance might not be the number one thing on people’s minds. Probably shouldn’t be, actually.

But sometimes the suspense comes in another form.  It’s more subtle and in the background. My newest release, Stranded, is not really about running and hiding and searching for bad guys.  It’s about two men who worked together and were in a serious relationship but it imploded. They’re emotionally wounded and raw.  They worked undercover in a dangerous job – as assassins – but the destruction of their personal lives left them battered and broken. Now, months later, they’re retired from the danger game and trying to see if there is anything left to salvage. But all the lies and problems between them might make that impossible.

So where’s the suspense? In the secrets they keep from each other and choices they’ve made that now slowly come back to haunt them. With each new revelation, the unraveling continues. But for those who do like the “are they in danger” question,  there’s a bit of fun for you in Stranded, too. It’s not what I would term a romantic suspense but there’s suspense of a sort throughout. I’m hoping there’s something for everyone!

Stranded

Cabe got out of the gun-for-hire business the hard way—by nearly dying. Except then his former boss calls in one last favor for one final job. The mission should be simple: get a message to a retired operative in Alaska. But it puts Cabe face-to-face with the one man he doesn’t want to see and can never forget. Not after all the secrets and lies. Not after Brax almost killed him.

Brax Hughes lived hard and retired young to a cabin in the middle of nowhere. Well, that was the plan, but before he can hang up his sniper rifle, he has one last mission: win back Kyle Cabe. Brax wants another chance, wants to come clean, but after months of lying to Cabe, he knows he could face a bullet—or worse—when they meet again. And they will meet. Brax made sure of that.

With a storm moving in and someone lurking outside the cabin, time is running out. Brax needs to talk fast and keep his weapons ready. And his best weapon is the truth.

  12. The suspense in this isn't heart attack inducing - which is good. It has enough to keep you on the edge, swiping the page to find out what happens next.
