Thursday Thoughts with Jamie Dean

Hi, there! Jamie Dean here, author of The Story of Jax and Dylan.  A little about me first.

I’ve been described as a slutty pansexual with a heart of coal. I write angst and porn and my hobbies include laughing at other people's pain, masturbating, and writing things that cause pain and masturbation in others. (You can also read my actual bio, if you’re into the kinky shit.)

Despite my coal-heartedness, I’ve been asked to talk today about my favorite fantasy or dream.
As a writer, I am in my head a lot, so I have a lot of both fantasies and dreams—and as the high-sex-drive-having partner of a very sexy man, I have even more fantasies and dreams than some other less fortunate writers might have. Hands down, though, my favorite fantasy has got to be the oft-used "snowed in where it's so cold we have to snuggle together to stay warm" trope.

It's just so... basic. You're cold and you need to be warm. Maybe you got caught in the snow and the other person rescued you by sharing their body heat. Or maybe you both got stuck in a cabin in a freak ice storm and the power went out and you have to share a sleeping bag for you both to stay warm.

Either way, your bodies are close. If there's an attraction, it's virtually impossible to deny it when you have to lie curled together like that. So it's perfect as a trope, but it's also nice to think about on chilly winter nights when you don't have anyone else in your bed. To imagine someone warm lying just in front of or just behind you.

To conjure that moment when you both realize how much you want the other - and then that they want you back.

I think that's what is so perfect about it. We put up so many walls, but when we are faced with a survival situation, we let down barriers that we normally guard fiercely to protect ourselves. In that situation, each person would start out focused on the lack of heat. The freezing temps would temporarily block thoughts that otherwise probably would be in the forefront of one’s mind. You’re concentrating on getting warm at first, and that’s all.

But then, you start to warm up. And your body starts to notice the other body.

It works well in all genres of romance, of course, but I like the idea of it for gay romance especially. If one of the characters is struggling with his sexuality—or if one character has no idea if the other character is straight or not—that little get-me-warm-quick snuggle can clear up so many issues. No words needed. Just simple, straight gaylyforward physiology taking control and saying what maybe you can’t.

I love that. The idea of lying there with another person, only trying not to freeze, but instead ending up trying not to lose yourself in lust.

In fact, I love it so much that, if I could've found a way to work it into The Story of Jax and Dylan? I probably would have. I didn't use it in TSOJAD for two main reasons, really. For one thing, they'd have been together far too soon that way—see: Hobbies: Causing Pain—and the other, much more important reason was that I really, really wanted to get those men into swim trunks.

Mmm, men in swim trunks. I’m sorry, what were we talking about? Ah, yes.

You’re lying there and you’ve wanted them for so long—or maybe you never even knew you wanted them—and now their perfect ass is tucked up against your crotch, just begging you to roll your hips forward. And you could touch them, anywhere, so easily.

And then suddenly their breathing is rapid and their heartbeat seems to be pounding into your chest. Because they’ve realized that your dick has taken a real interest in the proceedings. They know and it’s the moment of truth, when you find out how they feel about it.

Or maybe you’re lying in front of them, trying not to think about how good they smell and how safe you feel and then it’s their dick that starts to perk up. And you get that hot flash of adrenaline burn across your skin as you entertain the possibility that maybe, maybe, your desires aren’t unrequited after all.

And then it’s all lips and hands and really putting body heat to good use, until you’re so hot you have to throw off the covers and let your naked bodies breathe so you don’t catch hypothermia from sweating. And he’s moving in you or you’re moving in him and you’ve forgotten what the cold even felt like, even though your lips were blue just a few minutes before.

And you’re so hot you think you might catch fire and then... your cries of ecstasy bounce off the cabin walls and it’s all over but the clean up and the cuddling.

That’s my favorite daydream fantasy. What’s yours?

The Story of Jax and Dylan

Dylan and Jax were typical best friends, until Dylan fell for Jax and kissed him the night before senior prom. Dylan had to move away before they could talk about it, so he has spent ten years thinking Jax hated him for that kiss.

Reconnecting on Facebook allows them to meet again, and they quickly become as close as ever, spending most of their free time together. Dylan falls for Jax a second time, even though Jax has a girlfriend and appears to be straight.

Important secrets about Jax may lie hidden in the books he's written, but Jax has asked Dylan not to read them, and Dylan refuses to break his promise. When the truth finally surfaces, their lives will never be the same.

  1. OH MAH GAWD. I literally cannot wait until I have enough money to read this. ( a weird sentence, but you know what I mean.) I'm so excited! <3 -Charlie

  2. Right now my favorite fantasy is winning the lotto. Then I'd always have enough money to buy every book I ever wanted!
